Champaran, the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi's historic satyagraha, is playing a pivotal role in the ongoing Bihar Assembly elections. Polling across 3,156 booths in the nine assembly constituencies of West
Champaran district passed off peacefully on Tuesday. The region, which once ignited a revolution that shook the British Empire, could now influence the political landscape of the state.Together, East and West Champaran had delivered a decisive mandate to the NDA in the previous election, giving it 17 of the 21 seats. This time, however, the contests are shaping up to be tighter. The BJP has fielded candidates in seven of West Champaran's nine constituencies, while both the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) (LJP (RV)) are contesting on two seats each. The Mahagatbandhan has put up 10 contenders, six from the Congress, two from the RJD, and one each from the VIP and CPI(ML). Notably, Narkatiaganj is witnessing a rare "friendly fight" between Congress and RJD candidates. Adding a new dimension to the race, Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj has fielded candidates in all nine seats, though its nominee from Valmikinagar was disqualified after nomination rejection.
West Champaran district: What are the key contests?
This time, the Bettiah Assembly constituency is witnessing a three-way contest between state minister and BJP candidate Renu Devi, Congress candidate Wasi Ahmed, and independent candidate Rohit Sikaria. Voter trends indicate that Renu Devi is likely to win by a narrow margin.On the other hand, in the Chanpatia assembly constituency, a tough competition is expected between Congress candidate Abhishek Ranjan and BJP MLA Umakant Singh. Singh is seeking re-election after his 2020 victory.Similarly, the Nautan Assembly constituency is showing signs of favouring Congress candidate Amit Giri as per the exit polls, while the situation in Narkatiaganj is expected to swing in favour of BJP's Sanjay Pandey due to a split in votes between the two Mahagatbandhan candidates.JDU candidate Samridh Verma is in a strong position from the Sikta assembly, while BJP MLA Vinay Bihari is said to win from the Lauriya assembly once again, according to the exit polls. Apart from this, JDU's Rinku Singh and BJP's Ram Singh are expected to retain Valmiki Nagar and Bagaha, while Ramnagar is expected to swing in favour of the RJD.
