Champaran, the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi's historic satyagraha, is playing a pivotal role in the ongoing Bihar Assembly elections. Polling across 3,156 booths in the nine assembly constituencies of West Champaran district passed off peacefully on Tuesday. The region, which once ignited a revolution that shook the British Empire, could now influence the political landscape of the state.Together, East and West Champaran had delivered a decisive mandate to the NDA in the previous election, giving it 17 of the 21 seats. This time, the Bettiah Assembly constituency is witnessing a three-way contest between state minister and BJP candidate Renu Devi, Congress candidate Wasi Ahmed, and independent candidate Rohit Sikaria. Voter trends indicate that Renu Devi is likely to win by a narrow margin.On the other hand, in the Chanpatia assembly constituency, a tough competition is expected between Congress candidate Abhishek Ranjan and BJP MLA Umakant Singh.
