The Haryana government has directed a temporary shutdown of mobile internet, bulk SMS, and dongle-based data services in parts of Faridabad district as a precautionary measure to ensure law and order during a demolition operation scheduled for May 30.The restrictions have been imposed to prevent any disturbance to public peace and maintain security in the designated area while the demolition drive is carried out.In a public order, the administration stated, "There is a clear potential for disruption of public utilities, damage to public assets and amenities, and disturbances to public law and order in the NIT Zone of Faridabad district due to the possible misuse of internet services through the spread of inflammatory content and false rumours
via social media and messaging platforms using mobile internet, SMS services, and dongle-based data services."The order further noted, "To prevent the spread of misinformation and rumours through various social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and X, as well as through SMS services, restrictions have been imposed. Such platforms could be used to facilitate the mobilisation of mobs, agitators, and demonstrators, potentially leading to loss of life, damage to public and private property, arson, vandalism, and other violent activities."Taking these concerns into account, the order stated that the temporary suspension of internet services has been imposed under Section 20 of the Telecommunications Act, 2023, and Rule 3 of the Telecommunications (Temporary Suspension of Services) Rules, 2024. The restrictions will remain in force on May 30.The order further stated, "This order has been issued to prevent any disturbance to peace and public order within a one-kilometre radius of the NIT Zone under the jurisdiction of Faridabad district. The restrictions shall remain in force from 12:30 am to 10:00 pm on May 30, 2026. The order has also been issued ex parte in view of the emergent situation explained in the preceding paragraphs. Any person found violating the aforesaid order shall be liable for legal action under the relevant provisions of law."
