Delhi Police Crackdown On Jantar Mantar: Dipke Says 'I've Been Beaten Up', Sonam Wangchuk Taken To Hospital

Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke on Saturday claimed that he was assaulted and detained by the Delhi Police during the protest at Jantar Mantar in the national capital. Dipke further alleged that climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was sitting on an indefinite hunger strike, was also being taken into custody and students were subjected to a lathi-charge.In a post on X, Dipke wrote, "I have been beaten up and put under detention by Delhi Police."

The CJP founder claimed that the Delhi Police stopped him at the place where he was staying and alleged that Sonam Wangchuk was forcefully removed from the protest site. "The Delhi Police has stopped me where I was staying. People are telling me that Sonam Wangchuk is being picked up from the protest site. Students are being lathicharged!" Dipke said in another post on X.

Sonam Wangchuk Taken To Hospital

Meanwhile, it is being learnt that Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a hunger strike at Delhi's Jantar Mantar for the past 20 days, was taken to a hospital by Delhi Police.

Releasing an official statement on the removal of Wangchuk from the protest site, Delhi Police said that the climate activist was shifted to the hospital "as per orders of the Honourable High Court and on expert medical advice due to his deteriorating health condition".The police further said that while complying with the Delhi High Court's directions, "The protestors tried to create obstruction, in which slight commotion ensued; however, police took maximum restraint and undertook the exercise safely." According to Delhi Police, repeated announcements were made at the protest site informing demonstrators that the action was being taken in compliance with the High Court's orders and due to Wangchuk's failing health."The police also appealed to the protesters at Jantar Mantar to "peacefully vacate the place at the earliest."
