New Delhi has, for the first time, formally acknowledged a covert Indian Army operation carried out along the Indo-Myanmar Border in July 2025. The disclosure comes through a Shaurya Chakra citation awarded to Lieutenant Colonel Ghatage Aditya Shrikumar of the 21 Para (Special Forces). The Shaurya Chakra is India's third-highest peacetime gallantry award after the Ashoka Chakra and the Kirti Chakra.Lieutenant Colonel Ghatage Aditya Shrikumar of the 21 Para (Special Forces) has been awarded the Shaurya Chakra for planning and personally leading the precision strike, which resulted in the destruction of a fortified militant camp, along the Indo-Myanmar border.According to the citation, the operation resulted in the destruction of the militant camp and the elimination
of nine armed cadres, including senior leaders of a notorious anti-national group operating in the region, with the Army citing his exemplary leadership and tactical brilliance during the mission.A drone attack on the eastern headquarters of the banned insurgent group United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) in Myanmar was reported in July last year, with the Indian Army denying any role in it.

The banned ULFA-I had then claimed that its eastern headquarters in Myanmar had been targeted by the Indian Army with drones killing 19 people. According to reports, senior ULFA (I) commander Nayan Medhi was killed in the attack, and some cadres of Manipuri insurgent groups, including Revolutionary People's Front (RPF), which is the political wing of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of Manipur present at the camp, were also killed and some were injured.However, in an official statement, the India Army has denied these claims. "There are no inputs with the Indian Army on such an operation," Lt Col Mahendra Rawat, PRO Defence Guwahati, told IANS.ULFA (I), headed by Paresh Barua, is now left with only one senior functionary, Arunodoy Dohotiya, who is in Myanmar. Another senior ULFA (I) commander operating out of Myanmar camps, Rupom Asom, was arrested by Assam Police in May last year.On the eve of the Republic Day, President Droupadi Murmu had approved gallantry awards to 70 armed forces personnel, including six who would receive the honour posthumously. These include one Ashoka Chakra, three Kirti Chakra, 13 Shaurya Chakra, including one posthumous, one Bar to Sena Medal (gallantry), 44 Sena Medals (gallantry), six Nao Sena Medals (gallantry) and two Vayu Sena Medals.
