Assam Flood Situation Remains Critical; 41 Dead, Over 6.53 Affected In 11 Districts - Latest Updates

Guwahati: Assam is reeling under floods triggered by heavy rains over the past few days. At least 10 people were reportedly killed on Wednesday in the floods, taking the death toll in this year's floods to 41. A total of 11 districts have been hit by the floods, affecting nearly 6.50 lakh people. The flood situation in the northeastern state is likely to remain critical, as the weather department has predicted more rains over the next few days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an 'Orange Alert' on Wednesday, asking people to remain alert. and a 'Yellow Alert' for the next four days as it predicted thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rains at isolated places.Among the deceased, one died in Guwahati. districts reported three deaths each, followed by two fatalities in Charaideo and one each in Karbi Anglong and Dhemaji, as per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).According to the daily flood report of ASDMA, over 6.53 people have been affected in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Hojai, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon districts. Sivasagar is the worst-hit, with nearly four lakh people affected, followed by Charaideo, which has around 1.11 lakh people affected by the deluge, while more than 97,000 people are reeling under floods in Jorhat.

According to the report, 939 villages are inundated, and 24,897.27 hectares of farmland have been damaged across Assam. ASDMA said the state administration has been operating 487 shelters and relief distribution centres in 10 districts, taking care of 24,418 people.Rescue and relief operations are currently underway. The Indian Army, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire and Emergency Service, the police, and civil agencies have reportedly rescued more than 8,500 people from Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong, and Sivasagar so far.The Buridihing river in Khowang, the Dikhou river in Sivasagar, Dhansiri in Numaligarh and Kushiyara in Sribhumi are flowing above the danger level. In Nanglamuraghat, the Disang river is flowing above the highest flood level, ASDMA said

Assam CM Visited Flood-Affected Areas:

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the flood-affected area of the state. He called the calamity “unprecedented”.
