Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Thursday, informed that his cabinet expansion will take place on Friday (today), June 5, with the induction of 12 ministers, including three new faces. The Chief Minister announced on X the names of the 12 MLAs who will take oath as ministers in his government.On X, Himanta wrote, "I am pleased to announce that members of the Assam Legislative Assembly will be sworn in as Cabinet Ministers in the Government of Assam on 5 June 2026 at 12:45 PM." Their names are:
- Ashwini Ray Sarkar
- Ashok Singhal
- Bimal Borah
- Biswajit Daimary
- Jayant Mallabaruah
- Kaushik Rai
- Keshab Mahanta
- Krishnendu Paul
- Nilima Devi
- Pijush Hazarika
- Dr. Ranoj Pegu
- Susanta Borgohain
Among these 12 MLAs, there are three new faces including --- Ashwini Ray Sarkar, Nilima Devi and Sushanta Borgohain, and they all belong to the BJP.AGP’s Keshab Mahanta, also a minister in the previous NDA ministry, has also been included in the ministerial list. Biswajit Daimary, the Speaker of the previous assembly, is also on the list of new ministers.The remaining ones were all ministers in Sarma's first cabinet, and they are BJP leaders. They are Ashok Singhal, Ranoj Pegu, Bimal Borah, Jayant Mallabaruah, Kaushik Rai, Krishnendu Paul and Pijush Hazarika.The cabinet expansion comes at a crucial juncture as the government looks to strengthen its administrative machinery and the address governance priorities across sectors such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, and rural development.Political observers note that such reshuffles are often aimed at balancing regional representation, caste equations, and performance considerations within the government.As per constitutional provisions, the size of the Council of Ministers in a state cannot exceed 15 percent of the total strength of the Legislative Assembly, which in Assam stands at 126 members. This limits the number of ministers to a maximum of 19, including the Chief Minister.
