The Madras High Court on Monday issued notice on a plea seeking a probe into alleged inconsistencies in the assets declared by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, LiveLaw reported.A bench of Chief Justice SA Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan issued notices to Vijay, the Director General of Income Tax (Investigation), the Election Commission of India, and the Returning Officers for the Perambur and Trichy (East) constituencies. While ordering notice, the court orally observed that there appeared to be an irregularity in the disclosures. "This is an irregularity. More than Rs 100 crores has not been disclosed in one constituency," the bench remarked, posting the matter for further hearing
next week.
The plea was filed by V. Vignesh of Chennai, who alleged inconsistencies in the affidavits submitted by Vijay before the returning officers in the two constituencies.According to the petition, Vijay declared assets of Rs 115,13,63,000 before the Returning Officer for Perambur constituency, while declaring assets of Rs 220,15,62,010 before the Returning Officer for Trichy (East) constituency. The petitioner said the difference was neither explained nor supported by documents. The plea alleged that the discrepancy pointed to suppression of assets and raised concerns over beneficial ownership, routing of funds and concealment of material particulars. It further stated that the contradiction could not be attributed to clerical error, and that either one of the affidavits was false or the corporate filings were incorrect, warranting investigation, as per the report. The petitioner has sought a probe into the asset disclosures and submission of a report before the returning officers of both constituencies. He has also requested that the report be made public before the polling date on April 23.The case is titled V. Vignesh vs Director General of Income Tax (Investigation) and Others.Actor-politician Vijay will be contesting from two constituencies - Perambur Assembly constituency in Chennai and Tiruchirappalli East for the April 23 Tamil Nadu Assembly election. Vijay, who bid adieu to his acting career and took to full-time politics, has been launching a campaign blitzkrieg against the ruling DMK. He had already said the contest was only between the TVK and the "evil DMK" and that other political parties don’t matter.Perambur has traditionally returned DMK, AIADMK, Congress and CPI(M) members, and presently DMK's R D Sekar, who won the seat in 2021, has been renominated. The PMK, which is part of the NDA, has fielded its state treasurer, M Thilakabama, in this high-stakes triangular contest, though former film director Seeman's candidate - S Vetri Thamizhan - is also in the fray.
