Rayagada: Cases of jaundice are spreading rapidly in Rayagada town. Several cases have been reported in Kasturi Nagar, Indira Nagar, and areas surrounding the CRPF camp.Local residents initially sought
treatment at the town hospital, where doctors diagnosed them with viral fever. However, subsequent private consultations confirmed jaundice, prompting them to seek immediate medical attention.According to reports, children aged 10 to 20 years are among those affected. Some residents are resorting to herbal remedies, while others are continuing with conventional treatment.Locals allege that the piped water supplied by the public health department has been contaminated for months and that sanitation conditions in the area are poor.In response to the situation, District Public Health Officer Ruma Mahapatra, accompanied by doctors Srinibas Sahu and Sangram Keshari Nimal, led a team to the affected areas for investigation. The team conducted door-to-door surveys, gathered information, and collected water samples from households reporting cases.District Public Health Officer Ruma Mahapatra stated that the cause of the jaundice outbreak would be confirmed after laboratory tests on the water samples.She also mentioned that contaminated food from local hotels or outside sources could be another contributing factor. While some patients have shown signs of improvement, doctors have urged the public to remain cautious and continue taking preventive measures.The health department is continuing its efforts to mitigate the spread of jaundice and address the underlying issues of water contamination and sanitation.
