This would be Rubio’s first official visit to the country, under Trump’s second term in the White House as President. As a lot of build-up is taking place ahead of Rubio’s visit, sectors including Energy, Cooperation, Trade, and Strategic Security are going to be the centre for talks.

World Eyes Rubio’s India Visit As Anxiety Continues over Tension in Mideast
Rubio is visiting India after hectic meetings in Sweden with NATO allies and the foreign ministers group, where he discussed a possible realignment of the strategic security alliance. He also made comments about the US-Iran war, saying there was "slight progress" during talks amid uncertainty about whether a deal will be reached or war will resume.
What Marco Rubio's Visit Means For India-US Ties?
Rubio’s India arrival is taking place at a time when New Delhi-Washington ties are going through a delicate phase, due to the India-US trade deal (announced but final outcomes are still awaited), the bitterness in ties that aroused after Trump’s tariffs on Indian goods exports to the US last year, Washington’s objecting to India buying Russian oil, and provocative statements by Trump officials from time to time since 2025, that kept relations between the two nations on edge. However, the US has rightly tried to balance the optics with President Trump calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi several times over the past year, discussing global events, including the Russia-Ukraine war, US-Iran war, trade, energy security, the Strait of Hormuz, among other issues.Overall, over the past year, US-India ties were marked by growing economic engagement amid friction over tariffs and Trump’s transactional foreign policy.
What to Expect from Rubio’s Visit to India?
Breaking the pattern, Marco Rubio will start his India visit from Kolkata instead of New Delhi. But why Kolkata? It’s because the city is the first which houses US' first and its second oldest consulate in the world, set up back in 1792.After flagging off his visit from Kolkata, Rubio will also travel to Agra, Jaipur, and later New Delhi.
Talks with Jaishankar
Marco Rubio will hold crucial talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and later participate in the Quad foreign ministers’ meeting along with other members Japan and Australia.
Is Rubio’s Visit a Step Forward by Washington to Reinforce Ties with India?
Secretary of State India visit is also being viewed with respect to whether it’s an attempt by Washington to reaffirm its strategic ties with India, at a time when India — ever since Trump’s tariffs — diversified its trade portfolios by partnering and announcing trade deals with Europe, New Zealand, among others.
Looking Forward to Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday with Indian Partners
Ahead of the visit, Marco Rubio termed India as a “great ally” and “great partner,” saying that he was looking forward to celebrating the US' 250th independence anniversary with the Indian partners.

Speaking to reporters in Miami, Rubio said that the US is ready to sell as much energy as India is willing to buy. He described India as a “great partner” and said his visit was important as it would give him an opportunity to meet with ministers from the Quad nations.“Well, we want to sell them as much energy as they'll buy. And obviously, you've seen I think we're at historic levels of US production, and US export,” Rubio told reporters in Miami as he embarked on the trip to Sweden (for NATO) and India.“We want to be able to do more. We were already in talks with them to do more. We want them to be a bigger part of their portfolio. We also think there are opportunities with Venezuelan oil,” Rubio said.
Rubio on Opportunities with Venezuelan Oil
Another aspect of Rubio's visit would be a focus on
Venezuelan oil. While speaking to the press on Thursday, Rubio mentioned a possible visit by acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodriguez to India next week and opportunities with Venezuelan oil, for India, as global oil supplies have been disrupted ever since the beginning of the Iran war after it closed the Strait of Hormuz.
Marco Rubio on Quad
Describing India as a great partner, Rubio said that his visit to New Delhi is important as it will also give him an opportunity to meet with ministers from the Quad nations.“They are a great ally, a great partner. We do a lot of good work with them. And so it is an important trip. I'm glad we're able to do it because I think there'll be a lot for us to talk about,” Rubio said.“We'll also meet with the Quad there, which is important. I think my first meeting as Secretary of State was with the Quad. I'm glad we are able to do it now in India and we're going to do one later in the year as well,” Rubio said. The high-level congregation of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD) - bringing together India, the United States, Australia, and Japan - is locked in for May 26 under the chairmanship of S Jaishankar.Over all, in his parting remarks before departing for India, Rubio said that the US sees India as a “great partner”, to which they were looking to sell as much energy India is willing to buy, get more involved with New Delhi and also wanted to be a bigger part of their portfolio. This visit comes at a time when India is exploring more partners to secure its energy needs (though it always has Russia as a reliable partner), amid uncertainty over its dependence on the Gulf region, in wake of the Iran war.
