Amit Shah Reveals Plan to Revive Bihar Sugar Mills, Explains How Farmers Will Benefit | Exclusive

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has revealed the government’s game plan on how it plans to revive the sugar mills in the Riga region of Bihar’s Sitamarhi, as he campaigned in the poll-bound state, which

is set to vote in two phases on November 6 and 11.In an exclusive conversation during ‘Chopper Pe Chunav Ki Charcha’, Times Now Group Editor-in-Chief Navika Kumar asked Home Minister Amit Shah that since one of the sugar mills that had been shut down was being revived as promised by the Prime Minister, what the plan was to revive the remaining ones.Responding to Navika Kumar, Amit Shah said that the government’s Cooperative Department has decided that wherever there is a possibility of groundwater in this region, the sugar mills in those areas will be revived.Sugar mills that have been shut down will be taken over by the Cooperative Ministry of the Government of India, through a national-level cooperative agency or organisation. These mills will then be run on a cooperative basis, and the entire profit will be credited to the bank accounts of farmers based on the average per acre basis, the Home Minister said.

Sugar will first be purchased at a rate that will be finalised, and then, based on the per kg submission of sugarcane by individual farmers, the profit from that quantity—on a pro-rata basis—will be returned to the farmer, he informed.So, in a way, based on the cooperative dairy model, the government will either set up new sugar mills or revive existing ones. Not just this, the government will also set up ethanol industries, the Home Minister said.Adding further, Amit Shah said, "A full-fledged, profitable unit would be established, and even if a Lalu Yadav-type leader comes to power, it won’t be shut down."

When asked whether there were any chances of Lalu Yadav’s party returning to power, Home Minister Amit Shah said, “Not at all.” However, he added that any system should be built on a foundation strong enough to withstand political change.He recalled that during Lalu Yadav’s regime, several sugar mills were shut down.

When asked how many such mills may come up in Bihar, Amit Shah said that the government has a full plan ready. An investment of Rs 18,000 crore will be fused, covering 25 sugar mills including those to be revived. The remaining funds will be taken as loans from banks.
