A chilling confession shattered the calm of a Saturday morning at Maharajpur police station in Kanpur when a visibly distraught young man as per reports, walked in, broke down in tears and told the officer
on duty, "Sir... I have strangled my wife. Her body is lying at home wrapped in a blanket."The man, identified as Sachin, 22, stunned the police with his admission. He as per a NDTV report, told officers that after killing his wife, Shweta, he wandered through the city for nearly four hours, battling the urge to flee before finally deciding to surrender. Acting on his statement, police immediately took him into custody and rushed to the couple’s rented room, where Shweta’s body was recovered.
A marriage that began in defiance
Sachin and Shweta were natives of Mohanpur village in Fatehpur district. Their relationship had begun in defiance of social norms. The couple had opted for a court marriage against the wishes of their families and moved away to start life on their own. Initially, they lived in Surat, where Sachin worked in a factory. About a month later, they relocated to Kanpur, rented a small room and tried to rebuild their lives. Sachin began driving an auto-rickshaw to earn a living. But behind the fragile setup, cracks were widening. During interrogation, Sachin told police that he had grown increasingly suspicious of Shweta’s character. He claimed money was frequently being deposited into her bank account, which she explained came from her grandmother. He also said he became uneasy about the presence of young men living across from their house.
A night of suspicion that turned fatal
On Friday, Sachin said he decided to test his suspicions. He called Shweta and lied that he was attending a party with friends and would not return home that night. When he came back unexpectedly, he claimed he found the door open and saw his wife with two neighbourhood youths inside the room.A heated argument followed, alarming neighbours who called the emergency helpline 112. Police arrived, questioned everyone and took them to the station. After the two men stated they were merely sitting there, officers counselled the couple and sent them back, advising them to sort out their differences peacefully. The tension did not subside. Back at home, the argument escalated again. Sachin told police that Shweta threatened him and said she would stay with the other men even if he killed her. Enraged, he strangled her. After the murder, Sachin fled to the Ghantaghar area, where he sat alone for hours. Recounting his decision to surrender, he as per the report by NDTV, told police, "I thought about how we had no one else, we eloped and got married for each other. Now she has no one, and neither do I. So I went to the police station and surrendered."Shweta’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination, while police continue their investigation into the disturbing case that has left the locality shaken.
