Despite the loss, Chowdhury’s candidacy stood out for her age and background. With no prior political experience, she was picked by her party to represent a “younger voice” in the Congress-led opposition alliance. She was also among only 59 women candidates out of 722 in the Assam Assembly polls.
Her entry turned the Guwahati Central contest into a generational battle, pitching a first-time Gen Z candidate against a 70-year-old seasoned politician. During the campaign, Chowdhury framed the election as a choice between “continuity and change”, drawing attention to youth participation in politics. The campaign, however, was marked by controversy after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma threatened legal action against her parents over alleged beef consumption and comments that he claimed hurt religious sentiments. Chowdhury dismissed the allegations as baseless.
