Women members of parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, urging him to take the strictest possible action against opposition MPs for what they described as "heinous acts" inside the House that brought "disrepute to democratic institutions" during the ongoing Budget Session. In their letter, the MPs expressed "profound gratitude and admiration" for the Speaker's handling of the proceedings during the discussion on the Motion of Thanks on the President's Address on February 4. Terming these actions a serious breach of parliamentary decorum and dignity, the BJP women MPs said such conduct undermined the sanctity of the Lok Sabha. They urged the Speaker to initiate the strictest action permissible under parliamentary rules against those responsible."Furthermore, sadly, some Honourable women members, behaving aggressively and carrying banners and placards, crossed over to the other side. They not only surrounded the Prime Minister's seat but also entered the Treasury benches where senior ministers sit...Therefore, we urge you to take the strictest possible action, under the rules, against those opposition MPs who have committed such heinous acts within the House premises and brought disrepute to our democratic institutions," the letter read.

Opposition plans countermove to bring no-confidence motion

The opposition, on the other hand, is planning to move a no-confidence motion against Om Birla. Sources have revealed that the opposition will bring the motion in the second part of the budget session, as it needs a notice of 20 days. The grounds identified for the move include Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi not being allowed to speak, women MPs being named by the Chair, certain Treasury Bench MPs being given privilege in the House, and the suspension of 8 opposition MPs from the House.Opposition MPs are demanding a discussion on the interim trade framework announced between India and the United States during the ongoing budget session.
