Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday visited the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on the final day of his Australia tour, accompanied by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and former Australia captain Steve Waugh. Showcasing the growing India-Australia partnership through cricket, the leaders interacted with young cricketers, met Australia's international mascot 'Ruby the Roo', and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening sporting ties.Addressing those present at the stadium, PM Modi said cricket has always been a natural bridge between him and Prime Minister Albanese."Whenever I have had the chance to meet my friend Prime Minister Albanese, cricket has served as a natural connecting point between us. We visited the stadium together
in Ahmedabad, and being here today, I can truly feel the sporting spirit—especially with legends like Steve Waugh and Lisa Sthalekar present among us," he said.
The Prime Minister also underlined the importance of sporting cooperation between the two countries, saying India and Australia would continue to support and uplift each other in sports. Reiterating India's sporting ambitions, PM Modi said the country is preparing to bid for the 2036 Olympic Games, adding that expanding sporting infrastructure and international partnerships will remain a priority."Whenever I have had the chance to meet my friend Prime Minister Albanese, cricket has served as a natural connecting point between us. "India is set to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030. We are also striving to host the Olympics in India in 2036. Brisbane will host the Olympics in 2032. Sports infrastructure will be developed on a mega scale to host these global events... I am delighted that a Big Bash League match will be held in Chennai, India. For any sporting league, hosting an event in India guarantees extensive reach and viewership," PM Modi added. PM Modi arrived in Melbourne on Wednesday for the crucial second leg of his three-nation visit, receiving a grand ceremonial welcome at the airport immediately after concluding a highly productive visit to Indonesia.
