Bangladeshi Cargo Vessel Sinks in West Bengal's Muriganga River After Engine Failure; All Crew Rescued by Cops

Panic spread across riverbank areas on Wednesday afternoon after aBangladeshi cargo vessel sank in the Muriganga River in West Bengal’s South 24 pargana district following a mechanical failure occurred.

The incident occurred midstream near Kachuberia, disrupting river traffic and raising environmental concerns. According to administrative sources, the vessel—identified as MV Tamjeed Nasir—had departed from Kolkata Port and was en route to Bangladesh carrying commercial goods. Preliminary investigations indicate that the ship’s engine developed a sudden fault, causing the vessel to lose control amid strong river currents.Officials said cracks soon appeared in the lower portion of the ship, allowing water to rapidly flood in. Recognizing the danger, the crew immediately sent out a distress call.Police from Sagar Police Station responded swiftly and successfully rescued all 12 Bangladeshi nationals on board.
