The Election Commission of India has ordered a Special Revision of the electoral roll in Assam with January 1, 2026 as the qualifying date. Announcing the exercise, Assam Chief Electoral Officer and Principal
Secretary to the state government Anurag Goel said the revision aims to produce a high fidelity and error free voter list in line with the mandate of the Representation of the People Act, 1950.Goel informed that pre-revision activities have begun across the state and will continue till December 20, 2025. During this period Booth Level Officers will carry out intensive house to house verification to identify deceased and migrated voters and to ensure the inclusion of all eligible new applicants.The election machinery will also rationalize polling stations, correct discrepancies in the electoral roll and EPICs, improve poor quality photographs and update control tables and section boundaries. The integrated draft electoral roll will be published on December 27. Citizens will be able to file claims and objections from December 27 to January 22. Special campaign days will be organized on weekends to facilitate public participation. All claims and objections will be disposed of by February 2, followed by database updates and printing of supplements by February 6. The final electoral roll will be issued on February 10.The CEO reiterated that only Indian citizens who have attained 18 years of age on the qualifying date, are ordinary residents of their respective constituencies and are not disqualified under law and can register as voters. Forms 6, 7 and 8 will be used for inclusion, deletion, correction and other changes during the revision period, with Aadhaar submission remaining voluntary. Goel said political parties & media organizations will be briefed by the CEO, District Election Officers and Electoral Registration Officers to ensure widespread awareness about the revision. Details on polling station rationalization will be shared after consultations with political parties.Emphasizing transparency, the CEO highlighted the two tier appeal mechanism under which decisions of Electoral Registration Officers may be challenged before the District Magistrate and subsequently before the CEO. Urging the public to cooperate fully during the door to door verification, Goel said active participation of citizens is crucial to maintaining an accurate and trustworthy electoral role for the state.
