Nearly 2,000 Gallstones Removed from 83-Year-Old in 90-Minute Laparoscopic Surgery In Uttar Pradesh

An 83-year-old man recovered quickly after surgeons at Yashoda Medicity removed nearly 2,000 gallstones during a 90‑minute laparoscopic operation, hospital officials said.The patient, an advocate from Bulandshahr, had suffered upper abdominal pain radiating to the back and retrosternal discomfort for almost six years before seeking care. Investigations at Yashoda Medicity showed the gallbladder was entirely packed with stones and had a thickened wall consistent with long‑standing calculous cholecystitis. The stones varied in size from “mustard‑seed” to “chana” (chickpea) dimensions; their combined weight was about 150–200 grams.According to the hospital, the team completed the laparoscopic cholecystectomy in roughly 90 minutes. The patient, who

also had hypertension and a serum electrolyte imbalance, was mobilised within four hours of surgery and discharged the next day.Dr. Pradeep K. Dewan, Vice Chairman and Head of the Institute of Minimal Access, Robotic & Bariatric Surgery explained, “Cases involving such a large number of gallstones are extremely uncommon." What concerned the medical expert was the prolonged pain that the patient was enduring for several years before seeking medical attention. The hospital team explain that the surgery itself was highly challenging, given the sheer number of gallstones and the patient's advanced age. Such complex procedures demand a high degree of surgical expertise and precision to safely remove the diseased gallbladder without causing harm to the surrounding tissues and vital structures.Medical experts note that prolonged untreated gallstone disease can lead to complications such as obstructive jaundice, pancreatitis, infections, and—rarely—an increased risk of malignancy.
