Who is Pralhad Joshi? India's New Education Minister

After

Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation from the Union Education Minister post, the Union Government has sprung into action, naming Minister of Consumer Affairs Pralhad Joshi as Pradhan's successor. Joshi has been handed additional charge, after Pradhan's exit under public pressure. Pradhan's resignation came after weeks of mounting pressure on the government due to the student-led agitations at New Delhi's Jantar Mantar. His resignation was accepted by President Droupadi Murmu earlier today, and on the advise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Union Cabinet, Joshi has been named the new Education Minister.

Who Is Pralhad Joshi?

Pralhad Joshi is a BJP veteran, having served as a Lok Sabha MP for five straight terms, starting 2004. Joshi is currently an MP from the Dharwad, Karnataka and had previously served as BJP's state chief in Karnataka from 2014-2016. Alongside his new Education portfolio, Joshi currently holds the Consumer Affairs and Renewable Energy portfolios already. Pralhad Joshi currently oversees India's public food security systems, consumer rights and the green energy transition. In the 2019 cabinet, Joshi served as the Parliamentary Affairs Minister and the Minister of Coal and Mines. In the previous cabinet, he was in-charge of co-ordination between both houses of the Parliament, while overseeing major structural reforms in the coal and mining sectors.
