Six passengers have reportedly died after they were run over by an incoming train in Uttar Pradesh's Mirzapur on Wednesday. The incident took place while the deceased were alighting at Chunar Railway Station.The passengers were getting off the Chopan Express at platform four and were hit by the approaching Netaji Express, Amit Singh, Public Relations Officer, NCR Prayagraj Division, said. "Three to four passengers have died in the incident. The death toll may rise," he said.National and state disaster response forces were ordered to rush to the accident site.The deceased passengers were going for Ganga Snan, Uttar Pradesh Minister Sanjeev Kumar Gaud said in a statement. "This is an unfortunate incident. We came to know that 6 people have died here,
5 of them belonged to Mirzapur district and 1 belonged to Sonbhadra. They were coming for Ganga Snan on a train and met with this accident. I express my sympathies to the bereaved families. May their soul rest in peace. We express our condolences to the bereaved families. We will provide them with compensation," Gaud was quoted as saying by ANI. "If any negligence is found in the investigation, action will be taken against those responsible," he added.
Passengers Got Down On Tracks: Railways
According to Railways, the Chopan Express had halted at platform number four of the station. The passengers, instead of using the footover bridge through the platform, chose to get down on the track, it said, according to news agency PTI. "Train no 13309 (Chopan - Prayagraj Express) arrived at Chunar Station Platform 4 (in Uttar Pradesh). Some passengers got down on the wrong side and were trespassing from the main line while the Foot Over Bridge is available. Train no 12311 (Netaji Express) was through from main line. As reported, 3-4 passengers were run over by Train no 12311 (Netaji Express) at Chunar Main," the Indian Railways said.
UP CM Yogi Adityanath Takes Cognisance
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken cognisance of the tragic train accident and expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. "Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of the accident at Chunar Railway Station in Mirzapur district. CM Yogi expressed condolences to the bereaved families of the deceased. The Chief Minister directed officials to immediately reach the spot and expedite relief work. CM Yogi directed SDRF and NDRF teams to reach the spot and expedite relief work. The Chief Minister directed proper treatment for the injured," the chief minister's office said in a statement.
