with defence officials, smiling as he prepared for the sortie that would turn fatal.Syal, a resident of Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district, was participating in an aerial display when the indigenous Tejas fighter aircraft went down and burst into flames in front of a large crowd. The Indian Air Force confirmed his death on Friday, announcing that a court of inquiry has been ordered to determine the cause of the accident. "An IAF Tejas aircraft met with an accident during an aerial display at the Dubai Air Show today. The pilot sustained fatal injuries in the accident. Indian Air Force deeply regrets the loss of life and stands firmly with the bereaved family in this time of grief. A court of inquiry is being constituted to ascertain the cause of the accident," the Indian Air Force said in an official statement, adding that investigators will examine all circumstances leading to the crash during the high-profile international air show.

Tragic video of Tejas crash

A spine-chilling video of the exact moment when the aircraft crashed into the ground surfaced online. The single-engine light weight aircraft crashed around 2:10 pm local time (3.40 pm IST) after the pilot had flown across the site of the prestigious air show in Dubai during the demonstration flight. The aerial display of Tejas was scheduled to last eight minutes.

According to an AP report, the air show resumed flight demonstrations about an hour and a half after the crash, with the Russian Knights flying overhead as emergency crews still worked the crash site. Dubai Air Show is a biennial event held in the UAE, and has both flying and static displays.(With agency inputs)
