The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday (May 11) arrested former West Bengal minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sujit Bose in PMLA case linked to alleged municipality recruitment scam. Earlier in the day, Bose reached the ED office at the CGO Complex in Salt Lake around 10:30 a.m., accompanied by his son Samudra Bose.This is not the first time the federal agency has summoned Sujit Bose in connection with the probe into alleged recruitment irregularities at the South Dum Dum municipality.Bose received multiple ED notices during the West Bengal Assembly election period, including one on April 6. He had then moved the Calcutta High Court seeking exemption from appearance, citing election campaign commitments.ED's Statement:"Shri Sujit Bose,
Ex Minister, Govt of West Bengal has been arrested today (11.05.2026) by ED in the Municipality Recruitment Scam. Shri Sujit Bose had illegally recommended 150 candidates for different posts under the South Dum Dum Municipality in lieu of pecuniary benefits," the ED said in a statement."ED has traced direct proceeds of crime in the form of flats acquired by him in lieu of providing municipality jobs to various persons. Further, ED has also traced huge deposits of cash in the bank accounts under his control. He will be produced tomorrow morning before the Hon’ble Special Court," it added.Bose reportedly received multiple ED notices during the West Bengal Assembly election period, including one on April 6. He had then moved the Calcutta High Court seeking exemption from appearance, citing election campaign commitments.About The Case: It is pertinent to mention that the ED had filed an application being CAN 2 of 2023 in WPA 9979 of 2022 with CAN 1 of 2023 in the matter of Soumen Nandy Vs The State of West Bengal & Others before the Calcutta High Court placing therein a status report on its findings related to the illegalities committed in the recruitment of various posts in the municipalities spread across the state of West Bengal. The ED had also conducted searches at 13 premises on October 10 last year including the office of Bose, the former West Bengal Minister of Fire and Emergency Services, wherein also incriminating documents and cash of Rs. 45 Lakh were seized.The ED initiated investigation in the case on the basis of FIR registered by CBI on the directions of High Court of Calcutta.
