least 58 people, including 27 children, were hospitalised after falling ill in a suspected food poisoning incident in Odisha’s Jajpur district, triggering a multi-agency investigation by the state government. The incident occurred in Patapur village under Dasarathapur block on Friday (May 1) after residents reportedly consumed a local delicacy from a roadside vendor.
Dozens Fall Ill After Eating Local Delicacy
According to police, those affected had eaten ‘Cuttack Dahibara’ and soon began experiencing symptoms such as vomiting and fever. The sudden outbreak led to panic in the village, with all affected individuals rushed to nearby medical facilities.
They were admitted to the Dasarathapur Community Health Centre and the Jajpur District Headquarters Hospital, where doctors began immediate treatment. District authorities confirmed that several patients have responded well to treatment.Jajpur District Collector Ambar Kumar Kar said 21 people have already been discharged after recovering.
Samples Sent For Testing, Probe Underway
Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling visited the District Headquarters Hospital to assess the situation and interact with patients.
"As many as 58 people, including 27 children, were admitted to the hospital. Preliminary reports suggest it was due to consumption of 'dahibara'. We have collected the food and water samples and sent those for testing," he told reporters.In a later update on X, he said, "Today, the Jajpur District Collector visited the District Headquarters Hospital, met with the patients undergoing treatment there, and inquired about their health condition."
The state government has formed three independent teams to investigate the cause of the incident and prevent similar occurrences in the future. "The government is also taking necessary steps to ensure that the sick individuals under treatment receive the best possible medical care," Mahaling added.Officials said further action will be taken based on the test results as the probe continues.
