Guwahati Landslides: Sargapur Battles Nature's Fury as Families Fear Another Collapse

Continuous heavy rainfall has triggered a major landslide in the Sargapur area under Basistha in Assam's Guwahati, leaving residents trapped amid debris and uncertainty. While multiple parts of the city have witnessed landslides due to incessant rain, Sargapur has emerged as one of the worst-affected locations. A ground visit to the area revealed widespread devastation, with several families struggling to access basic necessities such as food, drinking water and other essential supplies. Residents said the continuous rainfall has made living conditions increasingly difficult, with fears of more landslides looming large.One of the most severely affected structures is a three-storey building where the lower two floors have been completely buried

under landslide debris. The top floor, which also functions as a community hall and currently shelters several displaced families, has suffered extensive damage, raising serious concerns over its safety.Adding to the anxiety is the presence of a nearby electricity substation. Local residents fear that another landslide could damage the facility, posing a significant threat to the surrounding neighbourhood.In response to the crisis, the district administration has set up a relief camp at the community hall for families whose homes have either been destroyed or declared unsafe due to the landslide. The affected residents are being provided with immediate relief, including candles, bread and drinking water.However, with the rain showing no signs of easing, fear continues to grip the area. Many residents say that another spell of heavy rainfall could bring down homes that are still standing, leaving them with nowhere to go.Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as rescue and relief efforts continue in the landslide-hit locality.
