Kolkata: The newly-elected West Bengal government headed by Suvendu Adhikari took a series of decisions in its first cabinet meeting held on Monday. These key decisions include a five-year relaxation in the upper age limit for school job applicants, giving full control of Bangladesh border fencing within 45 days, and the immediate implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).Five ministers of Adhikari's cabinet - Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Kshudiram Tudu, Nisith Pramanik, and Ashok Kirtaniya - also attended the meeting. and a complete dismantling of governance; furthermore, they even went so far as to challenge the very Constitution of the country," Adhikari said during a press briefing.Here Are Five Key Decisions By Suvendu Adhikari Government:Fencing On Bangladesh Border: Implementing promises made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah to seal the country's porous borders with Bangladesh to curb illegal cross-border migration, the Adhikari cabinet, in its very first meeting, approved beginning the process of transferring land to the BSF for setting up border fences. "The transfer process will begin immediately, and the cabinet has empowered the chief secretary and the secretary of the state's land and land revenue department to complete the process within the next 45 days," Adhikari said.Bengal To Be Part Of Aayushman Bharat Scheme: Adhikari announced in a press conference that Bengal would now become part of the Ayushman Bharat scheme, alongside multiple other central welfare projects – like PM Jan Arogya Yojna, PM Fasal Bima Yojna offering crop insurance for farmers, PM Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme for upgrading state-run schools, PM Viswakarma scheme supporting artisans and craftspeople, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme for women's education and empowerment, and Ujwala 3.0 scheme for subsidised cooking gas connections. These schemes were allegedly kept out of bounds for the state people.

Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita To Be Implemented: Adhikari said that while the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) – criminal laws which replaced the IPC and CrPC Acts respectively – were long passed by both Houses of the Parliament, received the President's assent and of which rules have already been framed, has been implemented elsewhere in India, the Acts were officially yet to be promulgated in Bengal."We were surprised to know about this violation of the Constitution. The cabinet has cleared their implementation in Bengal with immediate effect," said Adhikari.

Age Relaxation In School Jobs: Adhikari announced the relaxation in the upper age limit for candidates appearing in government job examinations by five years.The announcement would now allow applicants in the general category a relaxation till 45 years from the current age cap of 40, and those in the SC, ST and OBC categories to apply for jobs till 48 years of age from the current limit of 43, officials said.Census: The state cabinet took the decision to start the census operations. "Today, we have issued an administrative order stating that the census operations will commence today. This initiative is finally being implemented after a delay of eleven months," the West Bengal CM said in the press briefing.

On June 16, 2025, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Office of the Registrar General of India, issued a notification. It has now been nearly a year since that date," Adhikari further stated."These individuals had deliberately stalled the census process. Their sole objective in holding up the census was to obstruct the efforts being undertaken by the Prime Minister to implement delimitation and thereby provide reservations specifically for our mothers and sisters. We will constitute a fact-finding committee to investigate this matter thoroughly," he added.Adhikari also confirmed that the new government would not discontinue any existing state schemes.In the recently concluded assembly polls in West Bengal, the BJP registered a landslide victory by winning 207 seats, while Mamata Banerjee-led TMC managed to bag only 80 seats.
