DK Shivakumar was sworn in as Karnataka Chief Minister on Wednesday (June 3). Along with Shivakumar 13 ministers also took oath. Senior Congress leader G Parameshwara took oath as the Deputy CM of the state. Parameshwara is the only Deputy CM in the Karnataka government. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi attended the swearing-in ceremony.The new Karnataka cabinet also included two leaders from the Vokkaliga community, including Shivakumar. Except from Khader and Yathindra, all those who sworn in had served as ministers in the previous Siddaramaiah-led government. Khader has been serving as the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, while Yathindra is Siddaramaiah’s son. On Tuesday, discussions were held by top Congress leadership, including Mallikarjun Kharge and Gandhi with Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar on leaders to be inducted in the new cabinet. Notably, the second cabinet expansion is likely to happen on June 20 after the Rajya Sabha and MLC polls.

Shivakumar's name was proposed by none other than outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah; it was seconded by Parameshwara, after which the CLP passed it unanimously.Notably, the leadership tussle between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar first surfaced back in 2023 when the Congress party had won the 2023 Assembly elections
