least five people were killed and 14 others injured when a passenger train rammed into a goods train near Bilaspur railway station on Tuesday afternoon, officials said. Dramatic visuals from the scene showed a coach of the passenger train mounted atop a wagon of the goods train.The accident took place at around 4 PM when the MEMU (mainline electric multiple unit) passenger train, heading to Bilaspur from Gevra in Korba district, collided with a goods train moving in the same direction between Gatora and Bilaspur stations.“So far, five deaths have been confirmed in the accident. Four others are still trapped inside the wreckage and efforts are on to evacuate them,” Bilaspur Collector Sanjay Agrawal told PTI.

The injured were rushed to Apollo Hospital and Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS) in Bilaspur, officials said, adding that one passenger was reported to be in critical condition.Railway authorities have mobilised rescue teams and equipment at the site, and relief operations are underway “on a war footing,” they said.The Railways announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 10 lakh each for the families of the deceased, Rs 5 lakh for the seriously injured, and Rs 1 lakh for those with minor injuries. A detailed inquiry by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) has been ordered to determine the cause of the collision and recommend corrective measures.Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed grief over the incident and said the state government stands in solidarity with the affected families. Sai spoke with the Bilaspur district collector and directed officials to ensure all possible medical assistance and support.
