Maharashtra’s political landscape is once again resonating with the name of Baramati across the country. In the much-talked-about Baramati by-election, Mahayuti candidate and Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar has secured a historic and completely one-sided victory that is being discussed at the national level. With this victory Sunetra Pawar has established a new record by registering the highest victory margin in the country’s electoral history. By the end of the 24th round of counting, Sunetra Pawar surged ahead by a massive 2,18,930 votes, earning herself an indelible mark in Indian politics.Sunil Kumar Sharma’s National Record ShatteredWith this landslide victory, Sunetra Pawar has shattered the national record previously held by Sunil Kumar Sharma,
MLA from Sahibabad, Uttar Pradesh. In the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Sharma had won by 2,14,835 votes, a record that was considered extremely difficult to break. However, Sunetra Pawar has surpassed that figure with her historic margin of 2,18,930 votes.Surpassed Ajit Pawar’s 2019 RecordAlong with breaking the national record, Sunetra Pawar has also added a new chapter to Baramati’s political history. Earlier, the record for the highest victory margin in Baramati belonged to her late husband Ajit Pawar. In the 2019 Assembly elections, Ajit Pawar had defeated BJP candidate Gopichand Padalkar by 1,65,265 votes. It was widely believed that this record would be nearly impossible to break in Baramati. But Sunetra Pawar has shattered that myth and set a new benchmark. The voter turnout in the by-election was recorded at 58.17%. From the very beginning, the contest appeared heavily one-sided in favour of Mahayuti candidate Sunetra Pawar. The main reason was the absence of any strong opposition candidate. Congress candidate Akash More withdrew his nomination, virtually ensuring Sunetra Pawar’s victory. After the Congress candidate stepped back, only 22 candidates remained in the fray against Sunetra Pawar, most of whom were independents or from minor parties. These included candidates from small registered parties like New Rashtriya Samaj Party’s R.Y. Ghutukade and Hindustan Janata Party’s Satish Kadam. The remaining 20 were independents, out of which 8 were local and others from outside Baramati. All Independent Candidates DefeatedAmong the independents were prominent faces such as Karuna Munde (wife of Dhananjay Munde) and popular Bigg Boss Marathi contestant Abhijeet Bichukle. However, in the face of Sunetra Pawar’s popularity wave, all 22 opponents together could secure only 4,837 votes. This figure clearly reflects the overwhelming trust and faith the people of Baramati have reposed in Sunetra Pawar. With this victory by the highest margin in the country, Sunetra Pawar has written her name in golden letters in the history of Indian elections.
