As Republic Day 2026 approaches, DRDO's LRAShM Hypersonic Missile is creating buzz in defence circles as it's ready to debut at the 77th parade along Kartavya Path on January 26, embodying India's surging defence self-reliance. This long-range anti-ship hypersonic glide missile, with a 1,500 km reach, arms the Indian Navy to pierce enemy air defence and neutralize threats in the ocean swiftly. Project Director A Prasad Goud explained to ANI, "This missile is being developed by DRDO for the requirements of the Indian Navy. Its basic advantage is that it is hypersonic, so enemy radars cannot detect it."He highlighted its potency: "Its range is about 1500 Km and can carry different payloads, then defeat the warheads on ships deployed in the ocean.
It travels at hypersonic speed and high aerodynamic efficiency." Capable of hitting 1,500 km targets in under 15 minutes, LRAShM targets all warship classes, reshaping Indian Ocean dynamics. The DRDO tableau will spotlight this amid other stars like Dhanush Gun System, Akash (L) Launcher, and Suryastra Rocket Launcher. European Council President Antonio Luis Santos da Costa and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrive as chief guests, highlighting deepening India-EU bonds. Nearly 10,000 guests—innovators, SHG leaders, and startup trailblazers—fill the stands, touring memorials and mingling with ministers.
Missile's Speed Redefines Naval Reach
Goud detailed the glide mechanics that set LRAShM apart. This design lets it cover vast ocean expanses undetected, carrying versatile payloads to overwhelm ship defenses. The Indian Navy missile promises a decisive edge in regional waters. In Goud's words, "This missile can reach targets of 1500 kilometres in a very short time, maybe within 15 minutes. We will be able to destroy all classes of warships using this particular missile." Such capabilities amplify India's maritime posture at a time of heightened strategic focus. The Republic Day defence showcase via DRDO tableau will let crowds grasp this technological stride firsthand.
Parade Blends Might with Diplomacy
Looking ahead, Goud affirmed hypersonics as the vanguard. "Future of missiles is Hypersonic Missile. DRDO is currently working on two technologies: hypersonic glide missile technology and hypersonic cruise missile technology," he said. Advanced Lab Technology fuels these efforts, targeting 3,000 to 3,500 km ranges soon. India's rapid progress signals a new era in defence innovation. The parade weaves military muscle with societal honors, inviting SHGs, researchers, and employment pioneers. Guests explore National War Memorial and PM Sangrahalaya, fostering inspiration across sectors. EU leaders' presence amid Akash and Suryastra displays cements global partnerships. This Republic Day 2026 not only parades hardware but India's resilient spirit, live for the world to see.
