The spirit of Goa's freedom movement was commemorated with reverence and pride as Goa Revolution Day was observed at Azad Maidan, Panaji. The historic occasion marks the events of June 18, 1946, when Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia and Dr. Juliao Menezes inspired a mass movement against Portuguese rule, setting Goa on the path towards liberation and self-governance.The programme paid tribute to the martyrs and freedom fighters whose courage and determination became the driving force behind Goa’s liberation struggle. The observance highlighted the enduring significance of the June 18 Revolution and reflected on the State’s remarkable journey from the freedom movement of 1946 to the vision of Viksit Goa 2037.Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Pramod
Sawant described June 18 as a defining moment in Goa’s history and recalled the pivotal role played by Ram Manohar Lohia and Juliao Menezes in mobilising people against Portuguese rule. He said that their leadership ignited a movement that awakened the spirit of resistance and strengthened the aspiration for freedom across Goa.CM Pramod Sawant said that the sacrifices made by the martyrs and freedom fighters enabled Goa to emerge as a prosperous and progressive State. He further noted that the revolutionary spirit of June 18 continues to inspire the Government’s efforts towards inclusive growth and development. Highlighting progress made in infrastructure, education, entrepreneurship, connectivity and public welfare, Dr. Sawant reiterated the Government’s commitment to the principles of Antyodaya, Sarvodaya and Gramodaya and called for collective efforts to realise the vision of Viksit Goa 2037 in alignment with Viksit Bharat 2047.The programme also featured the felicitation of individuals and institutions associated with Goa’s freedom movement. Vijay Thorat, son of martyr Baburao Thorat of Chandrapur, Maharashtra, was honoured with a cheque of ₹10 lakh and a citation in recognition of his father’s sacrifice. Newspapers Kesari and Tarun Bharat were felicitated for their contribution to Goa’s liberation movement, with Rohit Tilak and Kiran Thakur accepting the honours on behalf of their respective organisations. Appointment letters were also distributed to 27 descendants of freedom fighters during the programme.Among those present were Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju, Union Minister of State Shripad Naik, Minister Shri. Ramakrishna (Sudin) Dhavalikar, Chief Secretary V. Candavelou, Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, President of the Goa-Daman-Diu Freedom Fighters Association Rohit Sardesai, along with freedom fighters, their family members, students, parents and other distinguished citizens.
