Yashwant Varma, who was embroiled in the cash-at-home scandal last year, has resigned. Varma sent his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu on Friday, sources told Times Now. In his letter, he said that he was stepping down from office "with immediate effect," as per his resignation letter dated April 9. Justice Varma wrote that he did not wish to burden the office with the reasons behind his decision, but expressed "deep anguish" over the decision. He also noted that it had been an honour to serve as a Judge of the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad. A copy of the resignation hasalso been marked to the Chief Justice of India.

What is the cash-at-home scandal?

The controversy dates back to March 14 last year, when a fire broke out at Justice Varma's official residence in Delhi. Varma was reportedly out of town during the time of the incident, prompting his family to call the fire brigade and the Delhi police. After the fire was extinguished, officials came upon a large sum of cash inside one of the rooms.The incident prompted the Supreme Court collegium, led by then-Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, to order his immediate transfer to the Allahabad High Court.(This is a developing story)
