New Delhi: After petrol and diesel, compressed natural gas (CNG) prices have now been hiked by Rs 2 per kg amid growing global energy market disruptions linked to the ongoing Iran conflict and the Hormuz blockade concerns.In Delhi, the revised CNG price now stands at Rs 79.09 per kg, up from Rs 77.09 per kg. The increase comes just a day after Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) announced a similar Rs 2 per kg hike across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).Also Read: Petrol And Diesel Prices Hiked By Rs 3 Per Litre Across India“Starting midnight tonight, the price of CNG will increase by Rs 2 per kg, bringing the revised rate to Rs 84 per kg in and around the city,” an MGL official said on Wednesday evening.The latest hike is expected to directly
impact public transportation and daily commuters, as a large section of buses, taxis and autorickshaws now run on CNG.Following the increase, autorickshaw unions in Mumbai have already demanded a fare revision. The unions are seeking a Re 1 hike in the minimum fare, which currently stands at Rs 26.Meanwhile, petrol and diesel prices were also hiked by Rs 3 per litre on Friday morning after state-owned oil firms ended a four-year record hiatus in rate revision. Petrol price was hiked to Rs 97.77 per litre from Rs 94.77 in the national capital. Diesel now costs Rs 90.67 as against Rs 89.67 per litre previously, according to industry sources, ANI reported. The increase has pushed fuel prices above Rs 100 per litre in several cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai.The latest hike in the fuel prices come after a gap of four years. Prices have remained on freeze since April 2022, but had a one-off reduction of Rs 2 a litre each on petrol and diesel in March 2024 just before the Lok Sabha elections.The price hike is only a small part of the increase needed to cover the sharp rise in global energy prices since the West Asia conflict began. State-run oil companies had not raised fuel prices for 11 weeks despite higher costs, but finally increased rates after continuing losses made it difficult to sustain operations.
