A unique initiative that transforms environmental protection into a mass movement is rapidly progressing in Sangli district. This campaign, led by MLA Suhas Babar, has now become a 'Tree Army' with the participation of thousands of citizens. The primary objective of this campaign is to restore Peepal trees instead of cutting them down and preserve the green environment. This green movement, which began in the Khanapur-Atpadi area, has become a topic of discussion throughout Sangli district. MLA Suhas Babar explained that the inspiration gained from the restoration of a single Peepal tree has now transformed into an environmental campaign with widespread public participation. People are so enthusiastic about this initiative that they are voluntarily
providing land, water, plants, and labor.Carrying forward the late MLA Anilbhau Babar's vision for the environment and soil, MLA Suhas Babar pledged to plant trees equal to his 78,178 vote margin in the 2024 assembly elections. He said that after sharing "The Story of the Peepal" on social media, the campaign received an unprecedented response, with thousands of people joining. People themselves named the campaign "Tree Army."The campaign is also seeing commendable contributions at various social and individual levels. MLA Suhas Babar planted 5,300 mango trees on his mother's death anniversary. A corporator from Vita Municipal Council dedicated 52 four-year-old trees to the campaign, while the Alsand Gram Panchayat planted 500 trees. With the cooperation of the Sangli District Administration and the Forest Department, a plan has also been made to develop a Japanese-style "Miyawaki Forest" on one acre of land. Additionally, a campaign has been launched to plant large, shady trees suited to the local climate in pastures and along roadsides. Previously, the green tunnels along roadsides, which provided shade and coolness to travelers, were destroyed due to road widening. The goal is now to revive them.On World Environment Day, June 5th, large, shady trees such as banyan, peepal, bahaava, karanja, and tamarind will be planted on a large scale. The "Tree Army" is fully committed to their conservation and promotion. Business organizations, social organizations, and various citizens in the district are also enthusiastically participating in this campaign. MLA Suhas Babar has appealed to those living outside the Khanapur-Atpadi area for employment to join this green campaign and rekindle their emotional connection with their villages.
