Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday for a three-day official visit aimed at strengthening the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership amid growing geopolitical and economic uncertainty across the Indo-Pacific. The centrepiece of the visit will be the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, where Takaichi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are expected to review the full spectrum of bilateral ties while charting new areas of cooperation in technology, defence and economic security. Modi-Takaichi Summit To Focus On Strategic Cooperation
The Annual Summit is expected to be dominated by discussions on economic security, investment, defence cooperation, maritime security and emerging technologies. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the two Prime Ministers will review ongoing initiatives while exchanging views on regional and international developments that directly affect the strategic interests of both countries.Diplomatic sources told ANI that semiconductors, critical minerals, artificial intelligence and resilient industrial supply chains will feature prominently during the talks. India and Japan are also expected to examine ways to reduce dependence on vulnerable global supply chains by expanding manufacturing partnerships and encouraging greater industrial collaboration in strategically important sectors.Defence and maritime cooperation are also likely to receive considerable attention as both governments continue to enhance coordination in the Indo-Pacific. Investment, Technology And Business Partnerships High On Agenda
Beyond the political discussions, Takaichi will participate in the India-Japan Business Forum, where she is expected to interact with leading industry representatives from both countries. Investment and innovation are expected to dominate those discussions as India seeks greater Japanese participation in advanced manufacturing and infrastructure development.Among the proposals under consideration are partnerships in artificial intelligence, battery technology, pharmaceuticals, critical minerals and energy resilience. Officials are also expected to discuss a large-scale green ammonia project in Odisha, expanded cooperation in biogas and initiatives under the POWERR Asia programme to strengthen regional energy security.Another important proposal involves developing an Industrial Value Chain linking the Bay of Bengal with India's Northeast. The initiative seeks to integrate manufacturing, logistics and connectivity while supporting broader efforts to diversify supply chains and improve regional economic resilience.Ahead of her departure from Tokyo, Takaichi highlighted India's growing importance in Japan's foreign and strategic policy. Addressing reporters before leaving for New Delhi, she said the changing international environment had made cooperation with India more important than ever.
"I will visit India shortly. Amid growing uncertainty in the international situation, the importance of collaboration with India, which shares fundamental values and strategic interests, is only increasing," she said. The summit is expected to conclude with a Joint Statement reaffirming the Special Strategic and Global Partnership, alongside several agreements and memoranda of understanding covering emerging technologies, energy cooperation, pharmaceuticals, critical minerals and artificial intelligence. The outcomes are expected to further reinforce India-Japan ties as both nations expand cooperation across economic, technological and security domains.
