In a rare and striking incident, a groom had to appear before an SIR (Special Intensive Revision) hearing on the very day of his wedding. Instead of heading to the wedding venue in a flower-decorated car,
he went straight to the BDO office in Birbhum district, responding to a summon issued by the Election Commission. The family members of groom arrived at the hearing centre in full wedding attire left everyone present astonished. The incident took place in Nanoor in the Birbhum district.At present, a Special Intensive Revision of the voter list is underway across the state. As part of this process, hearings are being conducted to verify voter details. Due to what has been termed “logical discrepancies,” notices are being issued to many voters, asking them to appear at hearing centres. This has led to allegations of harassment and inconvenience. Mandatory attendance at these hearings has resulted in several unusual situations across the state. In Birbhum district alone, more than 300 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have reportedly submitted mass resignations expressing resentment against the Election Commission, while opposition parties have also launched protests.
