Missiles, Stealth, ASW Suite: Taragiri Adds Depth to India’s Blue-Water Naval Capabilities

In a major boost to India’s naval strength, Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh launched INS Taragiri, a modern stealth warship built in India, at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam on Friday, April 3, 2026. This highlights the growing role of the eastern coast as the Indian Navy adds this 6,670-tonne warship to its fleet, PTI reported.Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) under the ambitious Project 17A, the vessel was created through cutting-edge engineering and a robust domestic supply chain, marking a significant milestone in India’s journey toward "Aatmanirbharta" (self-reliance) in defense manufacturing.

A Top Example of Engineering Excellence

As the fourth platform of Project 17A, the INS Taragiri is designed for the modern battlespace. Its most striking feature is a sleeker hull structure engineered to reduce its radar cross-section. This advanced stealth feature helps the ship stay hidden in difficult waters, making it safer and better able to survive in challenging sea conditions.

Advanced Weaponry and Propulsion

The INS Taragiri is a versatile powerhouse equipped to handle multi-dimensional threats:

• Propulsion: Utilises a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) system, balancing high-speed sprints with long-endurance cruising.

• Offensive Power: Armed with supersonic surface-to-surface missiles for precision strikes.

• Defensive Suite: Features medium-range surface-to-air missiles and a specialised anti-submarine warfare (ASW) suite.

• Systems Integration: All weapons are managed by a modern Combat Management System, ensuring rapid-fire response times to emerging threats.2

Strengthening the Domestic Defense Ecosystem

The commissioning is a victory for the "Make in India" initiative. With over 75% indigenous content, the project involved more than 200 MSMEs, sustaining thousands of jobs across the country. This reflects a maturing domestic defense ecosystem capable of producing world-class naval hardware.Beyond combat, the INS Taragiri is designed for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), proving its worth as a multi-role asset.
