Congress MP Shashi Tharoor will not attend the swearing-in ceremony of Kerala's CM-elect VD Satheesan. Taking to X, Tharoor said that he will have to skip the oath-taking ceremony of his Kerala Congress colleague Satheesan as he will be in Boston at that time. The swearing-in ceremony will be held on May 18 in Thiruvananthapuram."I’m sorry to be missing the swearing-in ceremony of my @incKerala colleague and new CM of Kerala @vdsatheesan. I am in Boston this weekend to deliver the Commencement address at the graduation ceremony of my alma mater, the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy at @TuftsUniversity — and also to participate in the 50th anniversary reunion of my graduating class!" the Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram wrote in his X post."An
occasion for celebrating the past in the US even as I look forward to the future in Kerala," he added.
The Congress high command on Friday picked VD Satheesan as the next Chief Minister of Keralam after the United Democratic Front (UDF) secured a massive victory in the Assembly elections, winning 102 out of 140 seats. Announcing it during a press conference, Congress leader Deepa Dasmunsi on Thursday (May 14) said that the Congress Legislature Party had authorised the party high command to select its leader after the meeting held in Thiruvananthapuram on May 7.“The Congress Legislature Party has met in Trivendrum on May 7 and has unanimously decided to announce the leader of CLP,” she said during the press briefing.“Based on consultations, it is decided that Shri VD Satheesan has been choosen as leader of CLP,” Dasmunsi announced.After the announcement, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal, who was a frontrunner for the post, said that the Kerala people gave a huge majority to the UDF and reiterated his full support for VD Satheesan as the chosen leader. In the recently concluded polls, the Congress won 63 MLAs in the 140-member Kerala Assembly. Its allies Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has 22, Kerala Congress (KEC) has eight and the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) three. Meanwhile, the Left Democratic Front (DF) bagged only 35 seats.
