Amid growing speculations about a likely leadership shuffle in Karnataka, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has requested an appoitment with the Governor of Karnataka, Thaawarchand Gehlot, on May 28, informed sources from the CM’s office on Wednesday. The latest development has further fueled speculations among Congress party members regarding the possibility of Siddaramaiah submitting his resignation to make room for his deputy, D K Shivakumar, to succeed him as the Chief Minister of the state. As per reports, prominent party members such as Rahul Gandhi and party chief Mallikarjun Kharge had a few sessions with both Siddaramaiah and D K Shivakumar discussing the situation surrounding leadership in the state.Congress leaders will be making their decision
about the matter after the Rajya Sabha polls lined up for next month. As per information provided by Congress sources, Shivakumar’s loyalists have been pressurizing party leadership to follow an understood plan regarding a leadership shuffle in Karnataka. Reports suggest that Siddaramaiah had agreed to lead the state in the initial two-and-a-half years before Shivakumar took up the mantle for the remaining tenure in the 2023 Assembly elections. In addition to this, sources within the Congress said the party is trying to offer Siddaramaiah another crucial role, including a possible Rajya Sabha seat, if he steps down as Chief Minister. However, no final decision has been made yet. Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar have not made any comment on these speculations about the possible shift in the political leadership of Karnataka.Political events in Karnataka have led to heated debates within the Congress party as its workers and leaders eagerly wait for the next step from the high command. The people supporting either Siddaramaiah or D K Shivakumar are continuously backing their leaders. There is no denying the fact that the possibility of any leadership change has become quite popular on social networking sites as well, as there are several Congress leaders who have preferred not to talk about this matter, instead leaving it for the party leadership to take the call.It can be stated that the opposition parties have made use of this opportunity to criticize the Congress party due to the power struggle within the party (with PTI inputs).
