Assam witnessed a rare and significant moment as an Indian Air Force (IAF) transport aircraft successfully landed on a specially prepared stretch of highway in Moran, highlighting the growing defence preparedness in the Northeast. The strategic landing exercise, conducted ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit, demonstrated the Air Force’s capability to operate from alternative airstrips during emergencies, conflicts, or natural disasters. For the drill, the Moran highway stretch was temporarily converted into a fully functional runway, reflecting close coordination between defence authorities and the state administration.Defence officials noted that such operations enhance rapid deployment and logistical flexibility, particularly in sensitive and strategically
important regions like the Northeast. The exercise underscores India’s focus on developing infrastructure that can double as emergency landing facilities during crises. The landing also drew large crowds of local residents, many of whom gathered to witness the rare spectacle. Several described it as a “once-in-a-lifetime sight,” expressing pride at seeing their region play a key role in national defence preparedness.Amid evolving geopolitical sensitivities in the eastern corridor, the successful exercise reinforces the Northeast’s increasing importance in India’s security architecture as well as disaster response planning. With this landmark event, Assam is not merely witnessing history it is emerging as an active pillar in strengthening the nation’s strategic readiness.
