a moment of immense pride for the nation and the state of Assam, Major Bhargav Kalita of the Kumaon Regiment/50th Battalion, The Rashtriya Rifles, has been conferred the prestigious Shaurya Chakra for his exceptional gallantry, fearless leadership, and remarkable operational success in counter-terrorism missions.The Shaurya Chakra, one of India’s highest peacetime gallantry awards, recognises acts of extraordinary courage in the face of grave danger. Major Kalita’s actions stand as a shining example of unwavering dedication to duty and the highest traditions of the Indian Army.

Since October 2022, Major Kalita has been at the forefront of multiple high-risk counter-terrorism operations. His efforts have led to the neutralisation of three dreaded terrorists and the apprehension of four hardcore Over Ground Workers, significantly contributing to the restoration of peace and stability in the region.One of the most defining moments of his service came on December 2, 2024. Acting swiftly on short-notice intelligence, Major Kalita meticulously planned and executed a surgical ambush against a highly dangerous A++ category terrorist. Demonstrating exceptional tactical acumen and fieldcraft, he strategically positioned his team to achieve complete surprise.

When confronted, the terrorist opened indiscriminate fire in a desperate attempt to escape. Displaying remarkable composure under fire, Major Kalita responded with precise and controlled retaliation, effectively sealing all escape routes. He ensured continuous surveillance and suppressive fire, keeping the terrorist pinned down.In an extraordinary display of courage and disregard for personal safety, Major Kalita crawled towards the concealed terrorist under intense threat. With nerves of steel and unmatched bravery, he charged forward and neutralised the terrorist in a fierce close-combat encounter. The eliminated terrorist was later identified as a notorious operative responsible for the killing of seven innocent civilians and multiple attacks on security forces.Major Kalita’s indomitable spirit, audacious leadership, and fearless execution of duty embody the true essence of the Indian Army’s ethos.
