Theresidents of Indore's Bhagirathpur, where several people died and over 150 hospitalised after consuming contaminated water, had been drinking it for the past six months, reports said.Officials said more than 1,100 people have been affected in some form or the other by the diarrhoea and vomiting outbreak linked to contaminated drinking water in the Bhagirthpura area over the past one week, of whom around 150 patients were hospitalised.According to reports, Bhagirathpur residents had complained to the city's municipal corporation and also reported the matter via chief minister helpline almost six months ago.

They said that Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava had issued tenders for pipeline replacement but the tenders were not been approved till the date.According to sources, municipal corporation officials wanted to commit major corruption in the pipeline tender that prompted authorities not to award it to any contractor.The Indore Mayor ordered the Municipal Commissioner to investigate why the tenders were not awarded for six months saying had the pipeline been replaced then, no one would have died today.

Madhya Pradesh High Court Directs State Govt To Submit Report on Contaminated Water Incident
On Wednesday, the Madhya Pradesh High Court directed the state government to provide free treatment to people suffering from vomiting and diarrhoea after drinking contaminated water in Indore city, and submit a report on the tragic incident.The HC's Indore bench sought within two days (by January 2) a status report from the government on the contaminated drinking water episode in India's cleanest city, where the Mayor has said seven people have died so far due to diarrhoea and vomiting, while the district administration has put the toll at four.

A vacation bench comprising Justices Rajesh Kumar Gupta and BP Sharma passed the directions while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Indore High Court Bar Association president Ritesh Inani.
