The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday extended the deadline for submitting the Status of Electors Register (SIR) in five states and one Union Territory by a week. The extension covers Tamil
Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Uttar Pradesh.As per the updated timeline, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat will now submit their SIRs on December 19, 2025 (Friday), instead of the earlier deadline of December 14, 2025 (Sunday).Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands must now submit their SIRs by December 23, 2025 (Tuesday), extending the original deadline of December 18, 2025 (Thursday).
Uttar Pradesh, which already had the latest original deadline, will now submit its SIR on December 31, 2025 (Wednesday) instead of December 26, 2025 (Friday). Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa said the state had asked the Election Commission for an additional two weeks to complete the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in a systematic manner and ensure an accurate, up-to-date electoral roll. He added that the extra time was needed for district election officers to re-verify details of deceased, shifted and absent voters.Also Read: SIR 2.0 Crisis? SC Slams States Over BLO Threats, Warns of Anarchy Rinwa noted that the ECI has extended Uttar Pradesh’s previously announced SIR schedule by 15 days, based on the eligibility date of January 1, 2026, and has issued a revised timeline accordingly.Under the updated schedule, the counting period will now run until December 26, 2025, while the draft electoral rolls will be published on December 31, 2025. Claims and objections can be filed between December 31, 2025 and January 30, 2026.Between December 31, 2025 and February 21, 2026, officials will issue notices, verify enumeration forms, and process all claims and objections. Uttar Pradesh’s final electoral roll will now be published on February 28, 2026.Earlier, on November 30, the Election Commission of India had already extended the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) schedule by one week in 12 states and Union Territories, giving voters more time to ensure their names are accurately reflected in the electoral rolls ahead of the upcoming elections./images/ppid_a911dc6a-image-176545204340075645.webp)
