Nadu Chief Minister and TVK leader C Joseph Vijay became visibly emotional and broke down in tears while distributing compassionate government job appointment letters. The event, held at the Karur District Collectorate, was part of his relief push for the families affected by the tragic 2025 Karur rally stampede.
The event marked Vijay's first visit to Karur as Chief Minister since the September 2025 tragedy, in which 41 people lost their lives and over 100 others were injured during a TVK election campaign rally. As part of the state government's rehabilitation package, 32 eligible members from the victims' families were handed compassionate appointment orders for government jobs.Addressing the gathering later, Vijay described the Karur stampede as the "most painful time of my life." He announced that a memorial would be built in honour of those who died and reiterated his government's commitment to supporting the affected families. The appointment ceremony, however, came after legal scrutiny. A public interest litigation had challenged the government's decision to provide jobs to the victims' families, arguing that the appointments should not proceed while litigation related to the stampede remained pending. On Friday, the Madras High Court allowed the government to issue the appointment orders but clarified that the jobs would be temporary and subject to the outcome of ongoing judicial proceedings. The event also followed a political and legal tussle over Vijay's visit. Earlier this week, the Supreme Court declined to entertain a plea seeking to restrain the Chief Minister from meeting the victims' families or commenting on the case, observing that the judiciary could not regulate the movements or public engagements of an elected Chief Minister.
