'My Father Faced Vitriolic Attack In Parliament, Threats From Outside After That Judgment': Ex-CJI Chandrachud After Watching 'Haq'

Former Chief Justice Of India DY Chandrachud has revealed that his father Justice YV Chandrachud faced a “vitriolic attack” in the parliament and also many threats to his life after the Supreme Court bench

led by him delivered the landmark judgment 40 years ago ordering maintenance for Muslim women divorced by her husband.“There was a vitriolic attack on him in parliament for a judgment which said that a right given to women as per our law cannot be taken away from them on basis of caste or religion or whatever as these are rights which are uniform for every woman irrespective of caste, creed or religion”, the former CJI said last night after watching Haq, the Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam Dhar starrer at a special private screening hosted by Times Group and Junglee Pictures at PVR Chanakyapuri.‘Haq’ is inspired by that particular landmark Supreme Court judgment.“A personal resonance ..and an emotional moment for me ..the judgment 40 years ago was delivered by a bench led by my father Justice YV Chandrachud.I feel our society has come a long way in achieving the goal of true equality and so this (movie screening) as I say for me it’s a very personal moment it’s a vindication of someone who stood by the law”, said Justice Chandrachud.On Supreme Court mooting a Uniform Civil Code in the 1985 judgment and thrice later, Justice Chandrachud said, "Yes, it's of course an aspirational value reflected in the Directive Principle Of State Policy. All segments of society must be taken into confidence while initiating a debate and discussion on it."
