New Delhi: The software upgrade mandate for all Airbus A320 family aircraft affected the operation of several airlines worldwide, including flights from India to frequent destinations, with upgrade work
carried out mainly in Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata and other prominent airports across the nation. This comes after an airline reported a brief and uncommanded pitch-down event during flight. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the aircraft’s autopilot remained engaged throughout the incident, and the flight landed safely without further complications. Though no unfortunate incident occurred, it sparked passenger safety concerns among the authorities that prompted the orders for immediate software upgrade. In the preliminary checks by Airbus, a malfunction in the Elevator Aileron Computer (ELAC) occurred as a possible reason behind the lag. This followed immediate instructions from Airbus to issue an Alert Operators Transmission (AOT A27N022-25 Rev 00) on 28 November 2025. It advised operators to perform a software update or replace the affected ELAC. The same day, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) published an Emergency Airworthiness Directive (AD 2025-0268-E), mandating corrective action worldwide. Meanwhile, the DGCA also issued its own Mandatory Modification directive on 29 November 2025. As per which, all Indian operators of Airbus A318/A319/A320/A321 aircraft are required to comply within the prescribed timeframe.
