At
least seven people were killed while 12 others were injured after a passenger bus plunged into a deep gorge in Uttarakhand’s Almora district on Tuesday.The accident took place in the Bhikiyasain area when the bus, which was travelling from Almora towards Ramnagar in Nainital district, lost control and fell into the gorge near Vinayak, according to officials of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), PTI reported.
The bus was carrying around 17 to 18 passengers at the time of the accident. Officials said six to seven people are believed to have died on the spot.Rescue operations are underway, with injured passengers being pulled out of the gorge and rushed to the government hospital in Bhikiyasain for treatment, the SDRF said.According to a report by PTI, six people were killed on the spot in the accident, while another victim died from injuries while being taken to the hospital, the officer said.Uttarakhand SSP Pincha said that 12 people, including the driver, sustained injuries and were rescued from the gorge. All the injured were admitted to hospital for treatment.Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident. In a Facebook post written in Hindi, he said he was praying for the speedy recovery of those injured and that the situation was being closely monitored.“The entire incident is under continuous review, and I am in constant touch with local administrative officials,” Dhami said. He also prayed for peace for the deceased and strength for their families to endure the tragedy.The chief minister added that the district administration had ensured the injured were taken to nearby hospitals, while those in critical condition were referred to higher medical centres for advanced treatment.
