In a major setback to DMK, the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) on Saturday formally ended its nine-year alliance with the MK Stalin-led party, saying the party would decide on its future electoral alliances at an appropriate time. The development came after a resolution was passed at the party's General Council meeting. According to the resolution, the MDMK said it had remained a part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance for the past nine years based on a resolution adopted by its High-Level Committee meeting held earlier today.Announcing its decision, MDMK said that it had joined and continued in the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance out of ideological commitment to prevent "communal political forces" from gaining ground
in Tamil Nadu. Additionally, the party wanted to uphold the principles of the Dravidian movement.Detailing why the party has decided to part ways with DMK, MDMK Chief Vaiko while talking to Times Now said, "We have snapped our ties with DMK today. There are so many compelling reasons for this. The way in which seats were allotted, the way in which we were treated. We were humiliated and insulted. I can't reveal all the things. But we stomached it all and continued the alliance with DMK. We maintained the alliance spirit. I never uttered a single word against Stalin or the DMK government."
Will MDMK Join TVK?
Talking about the current Tamil Nadu government, Vaiko hailed Chief Minister Vijay and said, "He is running a transparent and corruption free government. Hats off to Mr Vijay. I extend my support to him.""One of our MLAs has joined the DMK. The other MLA says he'll maintain his closeness with MDMK. We have to wait and see. I'm a constituent of INDIA bloc. I will continue to be so," he added.
Why MDMK Quit DMK-Led Alliance?
According to the resolution, MDMK alleged that during the recently held
Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026, there were attempts within the alliance to weaken the MDMK's independent political identity despite its 32-year political journey, however, the party still chose to remain in the alliance and contest the elections.Referring to the post-election political developments, the party alleged that the political negotiations that followed were contrary to the people's mandate. "It is an open secret that arrangements were made to install the AIADMK, which had won only 47 Assembly seats, in power by forging an alliance with Hindutva communal forces. As a result, the claims that the Secular Progressive Alliance was an alliance founded on ideology and principles were rendered meaningless," the resolution stated."Therefore, this General Council resolves that the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) shall withdraw from the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance," the resolution said.Several former Secular Progressive Alliance allies, including the Congress, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Left parties and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), withdrew from the alliance following defeat in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections and extended support to the
Vijay's TVK, enabling it to secure a majority and form the government.
