An unknown person allegedly called Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raj Kumar Chabbewal while posing as Union Home Minister Amit Shah and asked him to come to Delhi for a meeting, sources said. Following the suspicious phone call, Chabbewal lodged a complaint with the police. He is the AAP MP from Hoshiarpur in Punjab. Police have begun an investigation into the matter and are trying to ascertain the identity of the caller and the purpose behind the call. The incident comes amid several past cases in which fraudsters allegedly impersonated Amit Shah or officials linked to him to target politicians and public figures. In February 2024, a man in Uttar Pradesh was arrested for allegedly posing as Amit Shah and calling a former MLA with promises of an election
ticket in exchange for money, according to reports. Police had then said such gangs often targeted political leaders and party workers. In another case reported in 2019, Delhi Police arrested two men accused of spoofing Amit Shah’s landline number and allegedly using it to demand money from a minister in the name of “party funds”.A separate 2020 case involved a man allegedly impersonating Amit Shah’s private secretary and contacting ministers seeking favours and employment-related help, following which Delhi Police detained the accused based on a complaint from the Ministry of Home Affairs.Investigators are examining whether the latest call to the AAP MP was part of a similar impersonation or influence operation.(With inputs from agencies)
