PM Modi 'Deeply Concerned' Over Bangladesh's Khaleda Zia’s Health, Affirms 'India’s Full Support'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday voiced serious concern about the deteriorating health of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, saying India stands ready to "extend all possible support in whatever way we can".PM Modi’s statement came shortly after leaders from Zia’s party reported that she is “extremely unwell” and has been put on ventilator support.In a post on X, PM Modi wrote, "Deeply concerned to learn about the health of Begum Khaleda Zia, who has contributed to Bangladesh’s public life for many years. Khaleda Zia, the 80-year-old chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was admitted to a private hospital on November 23 after developing a chest infection that affected her heart and lungs.Four days later, as several of her health issues worsened, the three-time Bangladeshi prime minister was moved to the coronary care unit.A local news outlet quoted BNP Vice-chairman Advocate Ahmed Aazam Khan as saying that Zia’s condition had worsened and she had been placed on ventilator support."She is in a very critical condition. There is nothing more to do except seek prayers from the whole nation," Khan told reporters outside Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also confirmed that Zia is still in critical condition and remains under intensive treatment, with both local and international medical experts overseeing her care, PTI reported."She is extremely unwell. The entire nation is praying for her recovery... She is seriously ill, and our doctors are making every possible effort. Local and foreign specialists are involved in her treatment. They are trying their best," Alamgir was quoted as saying by tbsnews.net.Zia is also battling several other health conditions, including liver and kidney ailments, diabetes, arthritis and eye-related diseases.Earlier this year, Zia returned to Bangladesh from London after spending four months there receiving advanced medical treatment.Her elder son, Tarique Rahman - the BNP’s acting chairman - has been living in London since 2008, while her younger son, Arafat Rahman, passed away earlier this year after suffering a cardiac arrest.On Sunday, Tarique hinted that his return to Bangladesh remains uncertain even as his mother fights for her life in Dhaka. In a Facebook post, he said his return was “not entirely” in his hands, fueling speculation about possible political or legal obstacles.
