Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ram Mandir in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya has found widespread procedural lapses and flagged 70 suspicious incidents, many of them during the counting of cash offerings. The preliminary findings of the Special Investigation team (SIT) have been shared with the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust.
According to the findings, CCTV footage reviewed by the SIT points to repeated irregularities, including suspected instances of theft. 1. According to the report, the case is not limited to theft by a few employees; it also exposes major flaws in the temple's overall donation management system and a lack of effective supervision.2. The SIT has found that cash and valuables were stolen during the counting of donations. The report says these were not isolated incidents but occurred repeatedly over several days.3. CCTV footage examined during the investigation allegedly shows several employees removing cash from bundles of currency notes, concealing loose notes, and engaging in other suspicious activities. On multiple occasions, employees were allegedly seen pocketing currency notes, tampering with bundles of cash, and behaving suspiciously during the counting process.

4. According to the report, around 70 suspicious incidents were identified in the available CCTV footage between April 27 and May 6, 2026.5. The SIT has identified the role of six individuals as prima facie suspicious. The investigators have found CCTV footage, recoveries, and other evidence against these individuals. They are - Avinash Shukla, Anukalp Mishra, Lavkush Mishra, Manish Kumar Yadav, Karunesh Pandey and Ramashankar Mishra.6. The SIT found that prescribed security protocols were not being followed during the counting of offerings, like,a. Employees were not frisked before entering the counting area.b. There was no restriction on carrying personal belongings into the counting room.c. Cash from different donation boxes (hundis) was mixed together.d. The report suggests that the supervisors appointed by the Ram Mandir Trust and other responsible officials allegedly failed to ensure compliance with the prescribed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), resulting in negligence that allowed the thefts to continue.8. The SIT also found that the agreed procedures between the trust and the bank were not followed and several key provisions of the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) remained confined to the paper.9. It has also been found that the counting staff, appointed by the Bank, should have been rotated monthly, but is was not followed.10. The report also states that scrutiny of the bank accounts of the accused and their family members has revealed indications of deposits disproportionate to their known sources of income.The SIT has recommended a detailed investigation into their bank accounts, properties, and financial transactions to trace the alleged proceeds of the theft.
